Netflix Must See: Ryan Gosling Movies

Recently I have gotten away from only watching documentaries and TV series on Netflix. Last week I watched two movies both featuring Ryan Gosling in the leading role. Anytime I have watched a movie with him in it I am always impressed with his acting. Whatever role he plays I find him very convicting. Here are the two films I just watched with Ryan in them...

LARS AND THE REAL GIRL

First I have to say, I didn't read what this movie was about before starting it. I simply picked it because Ryan was the head role in the film. This movie was very awkward to watch. It was almost like watching a train wreck and I couldn't turn away. Ryan's character in the movie (Lars) had some childhood issues causing him to be unable to make normal relationships with people. He even struggled with his close family.

Lars (Ryan) ends up ordering a sex doll to have as a companion. The twist is that he believes that she is actually a real live woman. His family and all the people in the town love Lars so much that they all go along with it. Everyone pretends she is real also. The beauty of it is that Lars ends up healing some of his childhood issues by having the doll in his life. The movie is funny, emotional and heartwarming. Not what you would expect at all!

BLUE VALENTINE

Oh what to say about this movie!? I kinda felt emotional drained after watching it. Again Ryan was awesome. I loved his character in the film. Blue Valentine is a love story about a couple who basically feel in love at first sight. As the years go by and they are together they have their problems and struggles. I guess you could say this movie was a lot like real life. I felt uncomfortable watching it at moments because the scenes felt so real to me. As if I was actually watching these people have sex and arguments. (There is a lot of nudity in the film, I figure I should warn you.)

For the most part I enjoyed this film. Ryan's role I liked a lot. Michelle Williams is his co-star. She was very good in the film as well, but I found myself so angry at her character. I guess that means she did a good job? I did not like how it ended at all. Of course I'm not going to say anymore because I don't want to ruin it for anybody. Is this a Netflix Must See then? Yes if you like Ryan Gosling. If you don't, then no.

There are two other Ryan Gosling films on Netflix that I have watched and loved:

All Good Things

All Good Things is a great movie to watch to see Ryan actually play an evil character. He might be pretty to look at, but man he's a convincing psycho! It's starts out as a love story and changes into much more. He also dresses in drag in this film.

DRIVE

Ryan plays as a stuntman that ends up getting himself mixed up with the wrong kind of people. It's a very "at the edge of your seat" kinda of movie.

Have you seen any of these movies?
Do you like Ryan Gosling?

  1. Ryan Gosling is one of my FAVORITE young actors simply because he can put on a damn good performance. I loved Blue Valentine and Drive. I'm hoping to see The Place Beyond the Pines soon. I also loved him in The Notebook and Crazy Stupid Love. They were all fantastic movies. I have been slowly working my way through his stuff and Lars and the Real Girl, All Good Things and Half Nelson are on my list to watch soon. Last month I only watched one movie which is why I didn't do a movie recap but I've been watching more this month, so bring on the movies! :)

    1. Oh I am so glad that you really like him also. The Notebook was the first movie I ever saw him in. It was strange seeing him in that then watching Good Things shortly after. The roles are SO different. That was when I realized I needed to watch all his movies. That he was super talented. I have only seen these fours movies and The Notebook so far. If he is in a movie, I'M WATCHING IT! hahaha

    2. Oh yes! I've been a fan of him since The Notebook and am really happy he's getting these roles and showing off his talent. I bet you'll love Crazy Stupid Love. I thought it was so well cast and gave me quite a few chuckles. :)

I actually wasn't aware of "All Good Things." After your post I looked up "Good Things" and didn't see anything until I typed in "All Good Things" into IMDB. I like Kirsten Dunst and think they'd be a great pair. She does some wishy washy films but one of my favorites of hers was Melancholia. I look forward to watching the rest of his films. :)

    3. Oh crap, sorry I got the title wrong. I knew that! I guess I was too sleepy when I typed the post yesterday to catch it. I'll fix it. :) I'm not really a fan of Kirsten but I feel she did pretty good in All Good Things. Probably the only role I've liked her in actually. The movie is pretty intense I think. You'll love it I bet!

    4. No sweat. :) Have you seen Melancholia? It's a very artsy film, as far as how it's filmed, and so many either hate it or love it but I thought it was just beautiful. Another movie I really enjoyed her in was Crazy/Beautiful. Oh I love intense movies! I'll try and watch it some time this week. It doesn't take much to get me to watch a Gosling film. I'm really stoked for The Place Beyond the Pines. It's getting mixed reviews but I want to see it either way. :)

    5. I haven't seen Melancholia. I don't care what the reviews are on The Place Beyond the Pines. I will watch it regardless. ;)

    6. Oh me too. I'm a big fan of reviews though (HUGE fan of them). They reduce my chance of wasting my time on a crappy movies. There are movies that I will watch either way, and that is one I will mainly because I'll watch him either way. :)

    7. Well it turns out I've already seen All Good Things. I started playing it last night and about 15 minutes in felt a bit of deja vu, then I realized I'd seen it. So I moved on and watched Lars and the Real Girl. Definitely a different role for him- he doesn't get to play the "pretty boy" in that one. It was nice to see him in a different role.

  2. I really like Ryan Gosling and I'm always impressed by the wide range of parts that he can play. I haven't seen either of these though. We haven't been watching many movies because I work nights but we have talked about setting up some sort of movie challenge for ourselves.

    1. Awesome! I am glad I posted these today then. We have just become TV series junkies. It seems to be all we watch anymore. hahaha Working nights would make it hard to watch movies. You defiantly need one night a week though. ;)

  3. Drive was a GREAT movie...much different than expected.

    1. Very true! I feel like most of the films Ryan stars in end up being that way. I think that's why I like him so much.

  5. I LOVE Ryan Gosling! There are many tumblrs devoted to him and I don't mind a bit haha. Another fun movie is crazy stupid love. Definitely going to check this out. Right now thought I'm addicted to the series Nikita. I've just finished season 1 tonight! It seems a stupid series at first sight but it's actually pretty good and well made. xo
