5 Things

Gowdy Bike Race

Annika from All The Live Long Day tagged me in her post titled 5 Things. When you are tagged you then post 5 things about yourself on your blog. I was very faltered that she picked me. I actually had a hard time thinking of five things for this post. I share a lot of my interests and hobbies already on the blog, but here is what I came up with....

Me sep1996 freshmenyr 14yrs old

1 // I HAD RED HAIR
When I was in the 7th grade I started dying my hair dark shades of red. I've been dying my hair ever since. In the above photo I am 14 years old and a freshmen in high school. It feels so long ago now. Every once in awhile I think about going back to red. I just don't think I would like it the way I used to. To go from platinum blonde to a dark red would be too much of a change for me I think.

2 // STOP WASTING WATER
This is a pet peeve of mine. We have been getting a lot of rain lately which is great because Mother Nature is feeding the grass and plants. After a night of rain, I was driving to work in the morning and I saw a sprinkler system in someones yard going full speed. I thought to myself, "What idiots. How wasteful." It had poured all night long! I think it's sad that there are many people in this world who do not have clean drinking water and we are so arrogant about our "green" lawns. Also, it's time to ditch bottled water. Buy a filter and a reusable bottle. Save money and the environment. Be thankful for the water that comes out of our faucets. Not everyone is that fortunate. The above photo is of my old house and really green lawn from rain.

3 // I'M A HUGE GREEN DAY FAN
I've been a Green Day fan since 1994. I still can sing along to all their albums. I've seen them live a few times and they are so fun to see on stage. I hope to see them again. Their music has always made me so happy. I'm so glad they are still around and continuing to make great albums. I used to be so obsessed with them and thought Billie Joe (the singer) was the hottest guy alive. I wrote I love Billie Joe on everything. The above photo is my teenage bedroom back in 1996. See photos HERE.

4 // I CUSS LIKE A SAILOR
My secret is out. hahaha I picked this photo of myself because I look so cute and innocent. Don't let my smile fool you. ;) I cuss like a sailor. It's a true story. I keep my blog clean from it because honestly I don't really like that I cuss. I think it's fine in the privacy of my home with Cody. Usually the curse words start flowing out of me when I'm stressed or mad. I want to learn to control it better because if I ever decide to have a baby, I don't want some of the words I use to be their first. I remember the first time I dropped an F-bomb in front of my parents when I was probably ten years old. It was on complete accident when I was talking about the restaurant Fuddruckers. I'm sure you can figure out what I said instead.

5 // MY FAVORITE JOB EVER, IKEA
A few years back I got a job working at IKEA. I had to quit that job because I moved out of state to be with Cody. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't miss my job. Even though it was just a job in retail, they treated me great there and I felt like I belonged. My hard work was always appreciated and noticed. I always recommend working at IKEA to people. The bad thing now is that I compare my current job to IKEA. The bar is high since I loved it so much. I'm not happy at all, I just go through the motions everyday. Nothing feels right the way IKEA did. I know a lot of it had to do with the great coworkers I worked with. I loved my work as well though. I hope to move to a city where there is an IKEA so that if I want to work there again I have the opportunity to.

Did you learn something new about me? I can't believe how hard it was for me to think of five things.
I'd like to tag Kim, Peggy, Cazz, Angel and B. Please play along if you'd like. :)

  3. Ah, number 2, I never understood why people cared so much about having super green grass. It`s just grass, you`re not even using it really! People are weird. And number 4... samesies! Haha, but only with friends.

    1. hahaha I guess it's different when it's with friends. Everyone I know curses, even everyone I work with. So, I'm not alone. ;) You are right, it's just grass. I understand taking care of a yard, but it needs to be with moderation. Have a great weekend!

  4. I just read an article yesterday in our local community paper about how they are predicting the Texas drought to continue on for several more years. Texas got hit hard in 2007-2008 but 2011 was the worst. Jessie, I remember every stream that used to be a stream was gone. The swimming lakes were shut down because the levels were low. I remember walking in the park and the dirt, and even the sidewalk, was cracked everywhere, like an earthquake happened. Even friends from NY were getting news about our drought. It was so bad. And it's starting to get worse again.

Our lack of water terrifies me and I never understood the rules housing communities put in place. Because if you are in a community like that and your lawn isn't green or cut to a certain length you can get in trouble. I read and watched the story of one couple who were having so much trouble keeping their lawn green but the community they were in required it. They even imported grass that was supposed to thrive in the area but it died. So they could never keep it green. Jessie, they later went to prison because of it. I was astonished. Prison? Over green grass. Luckily I have no intention of ever being in such a housing community because their rules are ridiculous.

There are so many ways we can save on water like the well known, get rid of your bottles and use the tap, don't run the water when you brush your teeth and all that jazz. The other things Matt and I do aren't as "conventional." We do the approach with the toilet of "if it's yellow let it mellow." Also anytime we have water in a pot, say we made pasta or cooked beans, we drain it into a bowl and use that water on our balcony garden. Or (and this happens too often) we pour ourselves a glass of water and then find one of our cats heads in it drinking the water, so we just either pour that water into their bowl or into our patio garden. I find that most people waste all that pot and drinking water and put it down the drain.

One thing that I've read recently is that baths save more water than showers but not just any kind of bath. I've always taken 5 minute showers. When I grew up my dad would set a timer and would knock on the bathroom door telling us our time is up. It was his way of showing responsibility and that water doesn't "grow on trees" similar to money. It stuck with me. But what I've read is that if you take a bath and we have this concept that baths have to be full and cover our bodies when they can be about halfway or even just a third of the way and do the job. I read that with that approach they waste less water than showers. But where I read it they didn't compare how long of a shower they were comparing that bath too. So I plan to try it, to take a bath with just enough water and then take a shower the next day and plug the drain and see which uses more. Another thing we do sometimes is take showers together and we find that uses less as well.

I do wish more people understood how much of a water problem there is. I used to live in Alabama which was having water wars with Mississippi each blaming one another of using too much water. These water wars are only going to get worse. But what drives me up a wall is that if everyone ate plant-based we wouldn't have much of a problem with water, certainly not at this level.

    1. This is such a great comment Aubrey. I couldn't agree with you more. It's crazy that people can be put in jail over how green their lawn "isn't". We struggled with this problem last year while living on base. They would give you written warnings if you didn't water your yard. Ironic thing also was that the houses are in the process of being tore down. So tell me why the hell it matters if the lawns are green anyways? We had neighbors who would leave their house running all night long. We were lucky and got away with not watering hardly at all. September came and it started to get really cold outside, we were actually getting frost in the mornings. The grass was dying and summer was over. I remember we got a notice about our brown lawn on the 15th and we had to water. A few weeks later it snowed. Mother Nature causes some parts of the country to be dry. I live in an area that doesn't usually get much rain. It's normal to have non green grass. It's crazy how wasteful people are! It's such an ego thing really.

I am so glad you mentioned the pasta water. I never thought of that! I will start using mine for my flowers in my front yard. I hate wasting water and feel guilty every time I do. I fear that in our life time water may run out or at least be very limited. Not sure how people think we are going to live without it?? My cats always get water that is sitting around in our drinking glasses. :) Thanks for your comment and have a great weekend. I will be emailing you soon about the other stuff.

  5. Ha! I'd never have guessed your swear a lot! Don't think I've ever read a swear word in one of your emails or on your blog.

100% with you on water. It bugs me so much when people take ridiculously long showers or ignore hose pipe bans in summer.

And I can totally see you working at ikea! Your interior design style is so clean and full of colour.

    1. I didn't think people would think I swear a lot. ;) That's why I shared it. I had such a hard time thinking of 5 things about myself that I didn't already blog about. I like to keep my language clean on the blog and in emails. I love how on your blog it says "Mother Truckers"! That always makes me laugh.

I just really hope we don't run out of water. That is my biggest fear.

Yes, I was very drawn to IKEA because of my love for decorating. It was such a perfect fit for me.

  6. Thanks for taking part! You look so cute in the first picture. Red was always my go to colour in school, too. And once I dyed it black. But as I got older I went for more natural colours. And now I have my natural highlights, i.e. grey streaks.

Also, seeing as you still look adorable now, I find it hard to imagine you swearing! Your vlogs are so completely swear-free, too. You must have good self-control. :o)

    1. hahaha I guess I have control when needed. ;) Really I only cuss if I'm fired up about something or stressed out. Which I think it pretty typical. I cuss with my co-workers often because we are all stressed and hate our jobs. I just don't see cussing appropriate all the time. Not for me anyways. :) I enjoyed doing this, thanks for choosing me.
